The
following are the objectives of the water springs project:
* To divert surface runoff via ditches or berms
* To create a 100 foot (ft) perimeter against wild animals near the springs.
* To provide restricted access and protection for the spring
* To protect the water from contamination from the following sources:
chemical pollutants, bacteria, environmental wastes.
There are about 800 families who live in the city of Luila as rural peasants.
Water, drainage and sanitation systems are nonexistent. Water comes from
springs. Going down to the spring is
risky as the hill is steep. The water drops come out of a hose. More than
800 families use that spring everyday, including the school students who go
to the spring the same way the city children go to the water fountain.
Animals who share the same spring with people contaminate them. People drink
muddy and cloudy water. Six out of 10 people suffer from diseases such as
diarrhea, cholera, trachoma, parasites. One out of three kids is becoming
blind. 75% of kids do not attend class because their duty in the family is
to collect water, and going to the water spring to collect water takes time.
When they come back from the spring, the class is over.
LUILA VILLAGE MINISTRIES (LVM) has decided to manage three springs
around the village
of Luila. The objective
is to reduce water-related diseases by managing the spring waters and
cleaning water. LVM did pay water experts to do an extensive need
assessment.
Improving access to clean and safer water would (a) reduce illness and death
in Luila village: a clean water supply reduces diarrhea-related death by up
to 25%, while improved sanitation reduces it by 32%; blindness will be
significantly reduced, and (b) reduce the workload for women and girls. This
will increase school attendance for children and helped women engage in
other income-generating activities.
